CR 09-178 Public Review, GDSN BRG
The Public review for CR 09-178 begins August-27-2009 and ends September-28-2009. CR 09-178 Proposal:  Use a single repeatable code list to handle Application Identifiers (AIs) to enable users to indicate how a trade item is marked with information additional to the GTIN.  For example, with batch number in bar code format (AI10) or  that a trade item is marked with best-before date in bar code format (AI15). An Application Identifier is defined as "The field of two or more digits at the beginning of an Element String that uniquely defines its format and meaning"). See below for clarification of the business purpose.  This public review contains a link to CR 09-178 in the CR system and the Business Requirement Spreadsheet. Please use the croom comment feature to make any comments in the spreadsheet making any comments by 4 PM ET on 28 September 2009 Close of Public Review). Simple LOI 2-
Business Purpose:
Batch numbers are user for traceability and best-before-dates are used to manage FIFO (first-in first-out) in the retailers' distribution process. Some Swedish retailers have a high level of automation in the goods receiving process, and are constantly finding new ways to improve efficiency. To enable an automated goods receiving process that supports the level of traceability required and FIFO, machine readable data is necessary. (In some cases best-before dates and batch number linked to an SSCC and available from Despatch Advise messages). In cases when best-before-dates and bath numbers are not available in machine readable format or from Despatch Advise messages, a manual process is required to support the requirements for traceability and FIFO. The different processes (manual vs. automated) are used in different facilities. Items requiring the manual process are received at different locations from those that do not. In order to distinguish between trade items that support an automated receiving process from trade items that do not, the information required in CR 09-178 is necessary.

Call for members of the Healthcare Community to Join the Fresh Foods Work Group

This is a request for the healthcare community to JOIN the Fresh Foods Work Group.  This will be a unique opportunity to engage and collaborate with the Fresh Foods Industry to identify the commonality and differences for the Human Readable Interpretation (HRI) requirements for both sectors (Fresh Foods and Healthcare).  With this change, a consistent standardized and global approach to HRI marking can be implemented.  This would ensure user and regulatory HRI needs are addressed, prevent regional divergences and promote a practical approach to HRI application.
The onboard kick off call will be conducted on 24th of September, 10:00 am - 11:30 am EDT. More details can be obtained in the Fresh Foods Work Group community room and Change Request 9-214: http://community.gs1.org/apps/org/workgroup/gsmpfreshfoods/index.php. or please contact greg.rowe@gs1.org or john.ryu@gs1.org. To access or join the Community Room go to: http://community.gs1.org/join/
We look forward to your participation.
