GS1 Community Announcements and Public Review
Public Review on Human Readable Interpretation (HRI) Rules, WO# 09-000174
The document Human Readable Interpretation (HRI) Rules is posted for public review. The public review period begins 18 June 2010 at 1200 ET
.
Over the past 4 months, the Joint HRI Work Group (made up of members from the multiple industry sectors, retailers, industry associations and GS1 Member Organisations) has worked to consolidate current HRI Rules in the GS1 General Specifications, update current HRI Rules, and introduce new HRI Rules (e.g., trade items scanned at POS encoding GTIN-12 and -13 plus attribute data). The HRI GSCN consolidates and updates all current (Gen Spec) human readable interpretation of bar coded or tagged data that crosses all sectors, while introducing new HRI Rules for variable measure products scanned at POS using GTIN-12 and -13 and attribute data, which has not been available before.
Also enclosed in the packet is a cover letter outlining the work and the impact of your input to the GSCN HRI.
Please review the materials in the packet, use the Community Room comment function to record your comments and make your comments by 30 July 2010 at 1700 ET, Close of Public Review. The work group thanks you for your time and interest. Please contact Greg Rowe, work group facilitator for further information.

It is in no way normative or definitive and is not a standard. It includes implementation guides for a variety of the more complicated issues. This public review is only for the new Minimum and Maximum topic. Once approved it will be placed into the GDSN Trade Item Implementation Guide, which is located on the GS1 website. This document is posted for a public review on a motion of the Trade Item Implementation Guide Work Group. Please make your comments by 4 PM ET, 15 July 2010.

The eBallot for CR 10-155 begins June-16-2010 and ends June-30-2010. Call to Action: GDSN Preliminary Trade Item Work Group CR 08-060
This is a GSMP Call to Action to recruit users to continue the GSMP Preliminary Trade Item work effort started in the former GSMP Process. This work effort started in 2008, the Business Case Document (BCD) is complete and the work effort is moving from Step 1 to Step 2 BRAD Development.
Anticipated Business Benefits of this work are:
• Improved efficiency for introductions of new items (shorter lead times for introductions)
• Less corrections of Item Data for active trade items (less time and effort spent on retailers and suppliers disagreeing whether data was final or not)
• Allows early publication of basic data (all mandatory attributes populated) and possible later addition of additional information (variant, colour, deposit, catalogue price, extensions...)
• May allow earlier listing notice to suppliers
For more information and to join this group, please refer to the Call to Action document located here:

GS1 Industry Engagement Team Launches the Consumer Electronics Industry User Group
The CE IUG is a global voluntary user group working under the GS1 Global Office Industry Engagement structure. The Objective of the CE IUG is to discuss and define Consumer Electronic Industry supply chain needs to help drive efficiencies in key operations, improve visibility of goods as they travel through the supply chain and ensure benefits for all CE supply chain partners leading to improved customer satisfaction.
The Scope of the CE IUG covers:
1). Electronic equipment intended for everyday use e.g. personal computers, televisions, DVD players, refrigerators, hairdryers as well as products often used in entertainment, communications and office productivity.
2). Total Product Lifecycle - Forward Logistics (Manufacturer, Logistics providers, Retailers, Consumers), Reverse Logistics - (Consumers, Retailers, Service Providers) and End Of Life Operators
How has the CE IUG come about?
A group of major manufacturers, solution providers, university representatives and GS1 Member Organisations (MOs) who are convinced of the efficiencies GS1 EPCglobal standards can bring to their organisations, have been meeting through the GS1 EPCglobal Industry Action Group to discuss their business needs and share their implementation experience while taking consumer and environmental concerns into account. At the same time, several GS1 MO user group initiatives are taking place with local CE industry representatives. The GS1 Global Office Industry Engagement team explored the potential of combining Consumer Electronics (CE) industry efforts into one GS1 industry User Group. It is because of this that the GS1 Industry Engagement Consumer Electronics Industry User Group was launched.
What are the key drivers for the CE IUG?
The CE industry needs to make their supply chain:
* Effective, Responsive and Visible
* Reliable and Cost Effective
* Efficient and Automated
* Networked and Collaborating
* Safe, Secure and Compliant
* Scalable and Global
* Environmentally Friendly
* Customer Focused
Which use cases and applications demonstrate the value of the work the CE IUG will undertake?
* Product Return
* Maintenance and Repair
* Product Recall
* End Of Life (Product Disposal & Recycling)
* Point of Sale
Get Involved:
You will shortly receive notification of CE IUG Call to Actions via our GS1 Community Announcements.
CE IUG participants will work together on CE activities, share ideas and potentially initiate work on the definition of user needs for standards development. In response to extensive discussions with a core team, we are implementing the following work activities pending the commitment received via our Call to Actions which are currently under development:
* Product Central Master data - Product Central Master data Business Needs Group
* Consumer Electronics End of Life - Business Case development
* Reverse Logistics - Paperless Warranties and Repair Processes Business Case development
We strongly urge you and your members to take part in our CE IUG activities. So far, a core group of talented and energetic people who are eager to ensure efficiency gains and visibility in the Consumer Electronics supply chain thanks to the use of GS1 standards have already started discussions. This group needs additional end user and technology provider support. By joining our CE IUG activities you will ensure that your voice as a key stakeholder is heard. If you are interested in finding out more about any of these initiatives or would like to get involved in our global activities contact Audrey Kremer at Audrey.Kremer@gs1.org.
